Seeking recent personal experiences with short-stay Schengen visa applications

Hi everyone,

I am working on a blog post aimed at demystifying current travel regulations and am looking to compile recent stories regarding short-stay Schengen visa applications.

I would love to hear from anyone who has applied within the last five years. Specifically, I am interested in:

  1. Which country’s consulate or embassy handled your application?
  2. What was the actual processing time compared to what was advertised?
  3. Did you encounter any specific friction points regarding documentation or interviews?

Detailed accounts of complex situations or refusals are just as valuable as smooth success stories, as they help identify common pitfalls for future travelers.

I am writing to document a highly problematic experience with the German Consulate regarding my recent application for a scientific visit.

Realizing this might not address the specific rejection mentioned above, I want to share a crucial regulatory update regarding required insurance documents that affects many applicants from this region.

Visa consultant here.

Consulates: Mostly France, Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Italy, and Switzerland — many using third-party centers like VFS, BLS, or TLS.

Processing vs advertised: Officially 15 days. In reality, 15–25 days for straightforward cases, 30+ during peak season or if additional checks are triggered.

Common friction points: inconsistent travel purpose, no round-trip reservation or confirmed accommodation, weak/unclear employment letters, unexplained bank deposits, and applying through the wrong main destination.

Most refusals I see are documentation-based rather than nationality-based.
