Looking for hacks to get cheap UK to US flight, any ideas?

Hey! So, I’m an American living in the UK, and we fly back to the US to see my family pretty often. The thing is, I need to get to Detroit from England, and the flights are suuuper expensive.
Before, we just flew to Chicago instead since my brother lives nearby, and my parents could drive to see the kids. But this time, that’s not gonna work, they can’t pick us up or take us to Chicago. I thought about flying to Chicago and renting a car, but honestly, it wouldn’t save any money compared to just going straight to Detroit. And taking the Amtrak? Yeah, no way. It only runs once a day, and with my husband in a wheelchair plus all our luggage, it’s just too stressful.
So, I’m wondering does anyone know any hacks for flying into a different city first and then getting to Detroit cheaper? Or maybe flying to Europe first and then to a random US city before Detroit? I even checked Orlando flights, which were kinda cheap, but then flying from there to Detroit wasn’t worth it. :grimacing:
Right now, flights from Heathrow to Detroit in June, returning in July, are over $1000 per person. I really, really wanna figure out a cheaper way
