Hey everyone, I’m heading to Japan next month and super excited! I’ve already purchased my train tickets online for a few Shinkansen routes, and I even picked the specific times I want to travel. However, I’m a little confused about the seat reservation process.
Some websites say that even with a ticket, I still need to reserve a seat separately. Others make it sound like choosing a time is enough to guarantee a spot. I’d prefer to just hop on the train on the day if possible, but I also don’t want to risk standing for hours, especially with luggage.
Also, is it generally difficult to get a seat if you don’t reserve in advance, especially during peak season? Any insights would be super helpful! Do I need to reserve a seat or can I just board on the day?
Hey! I just got back from Japan. If you have a Japan Rail Pass, reserving seats is highly recommended, especially on popular routes and during peak travel times. If you already HAVE the actual tickets (not just the exchange order), you can board without a reservation in the non-reserved cars (usually marked). However, during busy periods, these cars fill up FAST, and you might have to stand. Not fun with luggage. I’d suggest going to a JR ticket office when you arrive and making reservations for your trips. It’s free with the pass and gives you peace of mind.
Adding to what visitingzebra2938 said, it really depends on the train and the time of year. Some Shinkansen trains have all reserved seating, in which case you definitely need a reservation. Others have both reserved and non-reserved cars. If you’re traveling during a major holiday (like Golden Week or Obon), definitely reserve. If it’s a quieter time, you might be okay without, but it’s still a gamble. You can usually check the train schedule online to see if it has non-reserved seating.
I’m a bit worried because I’m traveling to Japan next month too, for a very short trip, and while I planned to reserve seats, I was hoping I could be flexible if needed. So just to clarify, even if I have a valid ticket for a specific day, if the train has reserved seating I can’t board without a seat reservation? Could this be a problem if the train is fully booked?
Yep, crimsontraveler9876 is right, some trains are ALL reserved. It’s a bummer but better to know! I was almost caught out by this on my trip last year. Ended up having to change my plans last minute, which wasn’t ideal (especially since I was meeting friends). Now I always double-check the seating situation beforehand. Would be good to check on the JR website!
