Do I need to print Shinkansen tickets, or can I use a QR code or mobile ticket?

Hi everyone! I’m heading to Japan next month and super excited to ride the Shinkansen for the first time. I’ve booked my tickets online, but I’m a bit confused about whether I need to print them out or if I can just use the QR code or mobile ticket on my phone.

I’ve read conflicting information on different websites. Some say printing is essential, while others suggest that mobile tickets are perfectly acceptable. I’d prefer to avoid printing if possible, as it’s just one less thing to carry around and worry about losing. Would love to hear from people who have traveled recently on the Shinkansen.

Did you need to print your tickets, or were you able to use a QR code or mobile ticket successfully?

Hey there! I was just in Japan last month and used the mobile ticket on my phone for all my Shinkansen rides. No issues at all. Just make sure your phone is charged!

I also used the QR code. Worked great. Just screenshot it in case you lose connectivity!

This is my first time planning a trip to Japan and I was wondering about this too! Thanks for asking the question. Sounds like mobile is the way to go!

I always print just in case something goes wrong with my phone. It gives me peace of mind to have a physical copy. But it sounds like it’s not strictly necessary anymore.

From my recent applications, mobile tickets are acceptable. Please ensure that you have downloaded the tickets to your mobile wallet or taken a screenshot of the QR code to enable access in the event of network connectivity issues.

I used the QR code without any issues last year, but I’m a bit worried about whether the machines will read it properly. I guess it’s always a good idea to have a backup plan. If I print them, could this be a problem with double-scanning?

Just checking in! I think having both a digital and printed copy sounds good to me. Safe travels!

You usually don’t need to print your Shinkansen ticket if you booked a true QR/mobile ticket (you can scan it directly at the gate), but if it’s a voucher-type booking, you’ll still need to use the QR code to print a physical ticket at the station first.
