Collecting personal stories regarding short-stay Schengen visa application experiences

Hi everyone, I’m currently curating a photography and blog series titled “Borders & Bureaucracy,” aiming to capture the human side of international travel. I want to compile real stories about short-stay Schengen visa applications from the last five years. Whether you faced a chaotic rejection, navigated a complex appeal, or hacked the system for a smooth approval, I want to document it.

What have your experiences been like? I’m looking for the raw details—the waiting times, the interviews, and the specific hurdles you faced. I’d love to feature some of your narratives (anonymously if preferred) to help others navigate this process.

With regards to my application submitted last year at the Consulate of Greece, I must recount a rather distressing sequence of events.

I actually work in visa assistance, so I see this process from the other side.

For most applicants, the biggest struggles are:

  • getting appointment slots

  • understanding what documents are really required

  • anxiety during the waiting period

Technically the process is straightforward, but emotionally it’s quite draining because people feel they have no control once everything is submitted.

From what I see, rejections usually happen not because of one big mistake, but because the overall story doesn’t feel consistent (job, finances, travel plan, ties to home country).

It’s less about “hacking the system” and more about presenting a clear, realistic profile.
