Clarification on student sponsorship and hotel booking documents for France

Hi everyone, I am currently organizing my documents for a tourist visa to France from Lagos to attend some events during fashion week. Since I am a student, my parents will be sponsoring the trip expenses.

I have reviewed the checklist, but I am finding the sections on “proof of accommodation” and “proof of sufficient means” a bit confusing. Do I need to pay for the entire hotel stay upfront, or is a reservation enough? Also, regarding the financial documents, is a signed letter from my father sufficient, or do I need his specific bank statements physically stamped by the bank? I want to ensure my application is perfect to avoid any issues.

Realizing this is largely about the reliability of your application regarding financial backing…

I was informed of a refusal decision regarding my own application last year due to a technicality with sponsorship documents. In order to comply with the requirements, I had submitted my uncle’s bank statements, but I was told that the proof of family relationship was inadequate.

Hey! I totally get the confusion — the checklist wording can be a bit vague sometimes.

For proof of accommodation, in most cases a confirmed hotel reservation is enough. You usually don’t need to fully pay for the whole stay upfront. Just make sure the reservation clearly shows your name, the dates, and the hotel details. A lot of people use refundable bookings for visa purposes.

For proof of sufficient means, since your parents are sponsoring you, you’ll generally need:

  • A signed sponsorship letter from your dad

  • His recent bank statements (usually last 3–6 months)

  • Proof of relationship (like your birth certificate)

  • A copy of his passport/ID

About bank statements being stamped — it depends on the visa center in Lagos, but typically official bank statements (downloaded PDFs with the bank’s logo and details) are fine. Some people still get them stamped just to be extra safe, especially in Nigeria where documentation scrutiny can be stricter.

If you’re applying from Lagos, I’d personally err on the side of over-preparing rather than under-preparing. France visa applications can be quite document-heavy.
