B1/B2 visa interview rejection for medical clinical elective

Hey guys, logic check needed here. I’m a final year medical student from Mumbai and I recently applied for a B1/B2 visa to complete a clinical elective in the US. I thought my application was optimized, but my interview lasted less than two minutes and I was refused under 214(b). The officer asked about the funding (parents) and why I need to go to the US specifically. I said it was for ‘better experience,’ which I now realize was probably too vague. Start of internship is in 4 months. How do I debug this situation for the next attempt? Do I need to show more assets or change my answer regarding the course necessity? Pushing to get this sorted asap.

A 214(b) in this context usually means the officer wasn’t convinced about temporary intent, not that your profile is weak. “Better experience” is too generic and sounds optional, which makes the trip look non-essential.

For a reapply, the key is not more assets but stronger narrative + institutional backing: a detailed acceptance letter explaining why the elective is academically necessary, how it fits your curriculum, and proof you must return for internship. Funding is fine if documented. Reapplying without a materially stronger explanation will likely lead to the same result.

Think of it less as “debugging finances” and more as “debugging purpose and ties.”

Theoretical limit reached. The ‘better experience’ answer is a common logical failure point. You must provide a logical proof that this elective is a mandatory component of your current curriculum in India, not just a preference. Without documentary evidence of a requirement to return for graduation, the probability of approval remains low. Analyze your ties to home.
